Go Back
In order for the character of a human being to reveal truly exceptional qualities, we must have the good fortune to observe its action over a long period of years. If this action is devoid of all selfishness, if the idea that directs it is one of unqualified generosity, if it is absolutely certain that it has not sought recompense anywhere, and if moreover it has left visible marks on the world, then we are unquestionably dealing with an unforgettable character.

The Citizen Commission on Human Rights caught lying

Part of the "Lying: a Scientology practice" serie.

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) falsely claimed that its touring exhibit, "Psychiatry: Industry of Death", was co-sponsored by Howard University, and when the lie was spotted by an astute reader, the evidence for this lie was (tentatively) removed from the web. Howard University was not co-sponsoring the event, but was simply renting space to CCHR, and in the end, Howard University decided not to rent a space to CCHR, as reported by Dr. David S. Touretzky in a press release:
Howard University Cancels Scientology's Anti-Psychiatry Exhibit

November 1, 2006.

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), an anti-psychiatry hate group run by the Church of Scientology, will not be allowed to put on its touring exhibit, "Psychiatry: An Industry of Death", at Howard University this month. Located in Washington, DC, Howard is one of the nation's leading historically black universities.

The exhibit had been scheduled for November 20-26 at the Armour J. Blackburn Center on Howard's campus. Although the university was only renting space to CCHR, not co-sponsoring the exhibit as CCHR had falsely claimed(1), university administrators realized that providing a forum for CCHR's outrageous misrepresentations would be a disservice to their students. If CCHR is to be believed, the Howard University Medical School Department of Psychiatry — like all departments of psychiatry — is a haven for greedy drug pushers acting in collusion with the pharmaceutical industry, and cruel sadists who torture patients with lobotomies and electric shocks. CCHR's propaganda, defaming the university's medical professionals and discouraging students from seeking mental health services when needed, has no place at an institution of higher learning.

Howard's decision comes three days after the CBS News program 48 Hours Mystery ran a story on CCHR and the death of Elli Perkins. Perkins, a Scientologist, was stabbed to death in 2003 by her adult son, Jeremy, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia(2). Due to her Scientology beliefs reinforced by CCHR's anti-psychiatry propaganda, Perkins had refused to allow her son to receive medical treatment that could have quieted his delusions and prevented her tragic death.

"AJ Simkatu", Nov. 12th, 2006:

For some reason my e-mail program wasn't checking my e-mail over the last week, but I just discovered that my letters to the faculty and administration on 10/29 were very much appreciated by a number of people at Howard Univ. I received 3 personal responses from Howard Univ. administrators and faculty.  They promised to take action, and they weren't kidding, because apparently it didn't take more than 2 days for Howard Univ. to tell Scientology to shove it.

They weren't happy that Scientology was lying about their relationship.

CCHR falsely claimed that its touring exhibit, "Psychiatry: Industry of Death", was co-sponsored by Howard University:

"AJ Simkatu", Oct. 29th, 2006:

«I wonder if Howard University is aware that it is a co-sponsor of the "Psychiatry: an Industry of Death" touring minstrel show?  The Church of Scientology front-group, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) put out a flier proclaiming that Howard University is a co-sponsor of their touring exhibit:

Howard University even has a medical school, so it seems unlikely that it would participate in this Scientology nonsense that claims that the holocaust and Nazism were created by psychiatrists.

Is there just some odd-ball professor at Howard that got involved, or is the entire Howard University administration backing this nonsense?»
