Sterling Management Systems & Scientology
Critical information on Sterling Management Systems, its license with World Institute of Scientology Enterprises (WISE) and Sterling Management Systems' ties with the Church of Scientology.
WISE is an integral part of Scientology and WISE licensed consultants like Sterling Management Systems get money for every new Scientology recruit they are urged to make. To maximize the number of recruits does WISE distributes a 300 page "Consultant's Guide to Bridge Dissemination" manual. Bridge = Scientology speak for "Scientology path". The manual contains an entire section of sample waivers and legal forms so you will have a hard time sueing them in the case you get defrauded by Scientology.
Company information
In sofar I have figured out, Sterling was the old dba (doing business as) of Emery Wilson Corporation. and then at one point Sterling changed to being the dba of J. Chase Wilson Corporation. That last corporation owns currently (June 2004) the trademark on the typed form "Sterling Management Systems" (image).

In goes a professional, out comes a Scientolgist! |
Critical information
Sterling Management is good at what it does, namely, introducing people to the ideas of Scientology. The only problem is that what it does is quite different from what it says it does. If I had known this, at the introductory Seminar or through the mailings, I would have kept my money and signed up with a dental management firm and not a Scientology Recruiting Firm....
The way the courses were structured at Sterling Management systems, I would arrive at the offices at 8:00 in the morning and although they were scheduled to last only until 5:00 in the evening, they would generally stretch out until 10:00 or 11:00 at night. This went on all seven days. On one evening we received lecture from a representative from the Orange County organization of the Church of Scientology...
About two years ago, in May of 1996, I received some literature from a management company by the name of Sterling Management in Glendale, California. Their "pitch" was to CPAs and they promised to assist them to be more profitable by showing them a way to operate their firms in a more efficient manner. I sent for the "free" video and listened to a two hour sales speech over the phone and it sounded real good. It cost $14,000 but, by using the technology of Scientology (of which I was totally unaware of at that time) , they convinced me that I had to do this or my business was in jeopardy. I signed on for a 10 day course in Glendale.
4. Plaintiff is prohibited from presenting evidence at trial to support the claim that plaintiff has not done business as a branch office of the World Institute of Scientology Enterprises.
Sterling was founded in 1983 by a Scientologist Gregory K. Hughes, a dentist in Vacaville, California. Dr. Hughes presents himself at "Winning With Dentistry" seminars as an example of how well the Hubbard method works. He doesn't discuss the fact that a number of lawsuits have been brought against him and his dental associates by former patients charging them with negligence and malpractice, or that he has been under investigation by the California Board of Dental Examiners.
Dee Rowe, wife of local dentist Glover Rowe D.M.D., described their recent harrowing experience in what was supposed to be a "management seminar" in California. Dr. and Mrs. Rowe said they were held against their will by a religious cult and were forced to endure brainwashing attempts.
The allegations arose out of a relationship which began with a management and consulting contract between Rowe and a company known as Sterling Management Systems ("Sterling") which Rowe claims was a Scientology "front group." This contract related to Rowe's Alabama dental practice. Subsequently, Rowe alleges, Sterling recruited Rowe to enroll and participate in counseling programs at Scientology's Orange County facility located in Tustin, California.
The G.s say their involvement with Scientology began when Bob G. attended a three-hour Sterling seminar in May 1988 at the Cleveland Marriott hotel. After the seminar, G. said, he was given a personality profile and told he needed further seminars to improve his practice.
The firm offers seminars and courses that typically cost $10,OOO. But Sterling's true aim is to hook customers for Scientology. "The church has a rotten product, so they package it as something else," says Peter Georgiades, a Pittsburgh attorney who represents Sterling victims. "It's a kind of bait and switch."
b The Sutherlands' experience with Sterling Management Systems is, with slight variations, typical of what others (usually professional men and women -- doctors, dentists, veterinarians) report to the Better Business Bureau. The innocuous-looking card most of them receive in the mail, inviting them to Sterling's introductory seminar, is the first step down a financial and emotional toll-road that will quickly detour them to Scientology.
(Note that the name, logo and phone# of Cult Awareness Network are now owned by a Scientologist. Do not contact them for help! )
They tried to milk every penny they could out of any asset that I have, whether it's a credit card, whether it's my home, whether it's from a friend, whether it's from family - if I can get ahold of money anywhere, they would like to have that money.
The lawsuit was filed in LA Superior Court on December 26, 1991 by Finucane, Miller, and Turbyne, who reside, respectively, in Aiken, South Carolina, Sacramento, California, and Sohigan, Maine, against Sterling and the Orange County Church. The complaint contains causes of action for deceptive trade practices, fraud, and injunctive relief. . .
Two former assistants of a Canton dentist -- one a Catholic, the other a Protestant -- charge they were wrongfully fired because of their religious beliefs. . . The suit charges that the three women 'were continually, against their will, subjected to religious recruitment, proselytizing and brainwashing by defendants in fervent attempts to convert them to the Scientology cult.'
Christina M. Goudeau, of Baton Rouge, LA, filed suit against her former employers, Landmark Dental Care, in June, claiming religious discrimination. She said they fired her because she refused to go along with them in joining the Church of Scientology and using Scientology practices and terminology in the office. She says the dentists pressured her to join after they attended meetings and seminars by Sterling Management Systems, the Dianetics Foundation, and the Church of Scientology. (From "Suit blames Scientology for firing" by Fred Kalmbach, The Advocate [Baton Rouge], 6/16/93)
Two women who worked for a veterinarian in the Westchester County [NY] town of South Salem complained to the New York State Department of Human Rights that they were dismissed from their jobs because they refused to take classes promoted by the Church of Scientology. The classes were contracted by veterinarian Martin Goldstein from the World Institute of Scientology Enterprises, known as WISE, to improve efficiency and morale
Williams' first contact with the church was through the Sterling Management Co., a Tampa firm that promised to boost clientele at Williams' optometry business. Tests done in May 1986 to determine problem areas at the business led to the discovery of "personality defects or emotional problems" in Williams that would need further treatment.
A promotional brochure asserts that in a single quarter 109 Sterling Management clients "went Clear at Orange County Org" (group jargon that indicates they went through Scientology courses). And a review of a dozen brochures, mailings, and flyers put out by Sterling shows a clear link to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, but none makes mention of the Church of Scientology. Sterling representatives assert that the training is nonreligious.
"After having taken or agreed to some kind of business consultation with Sterling Management Systems, representations were made that the business management (techniques) would not work if they [the professionals] didn't resolve their personal problems." The resolution inevitably involves the Church of Scientology.

The text version reads:

The book you sell today could save someone's life tomorrow
Sterling Management Systems in Glendale, one of the top consulting groups on the planet, just recently won Bridge Publications booksales competition, being the top bookselling WISE-licensed group throughout the United States. This is the 4th time that they have won this award. CEO Kevin Wilson is particularly proud of winning this award as it is his company's best indicator of how much LRH tech they are getting into society: |
As has been previously noted at the top of this page, scientologists refer to "the bridge" as an term for scientology path. So what we have here is a scientologist CEO of a company which supposedly is using secularized Hubbard material and which will deny having any ties with Scientology, to be glad of having steered a client towards Scientology.
