Of course, much more work occurs than is reported to us. We'll try to relate the news in the order we receive it. 1 Faye Snider Lecture: "Families Under Siege -- the Cult Phenomenon: Its Effect on Family Integrity" Faye Snider, of the AFF Social Work Committee, gave a two-hour lecture, one of a series given under the auspices of the Social Work Department of Newton-Wellesley (MA) Hospital, in January. Her subject was "Families Under Siege -- the Cult Phenomenon: Its Effect on Family Integrity," which she describes as an overview of the cult phenomenon and mind control as it relates to families. She showed 45 minutes of video tapes of ex-members of cults. Two had been out for over five years, and one had exited more recently. Her audience included staff members-social workers and clinicians-and members of the community, including several local teachers. The teachers asked a number of questions about ritualistic abuse among schoolchildren, a topic that continues to elicit concern in the public at large. Ms. Snider, when asked how the issue should be dealt with by professionals seeing clients or patients who claim such abuse, said that whether a professional believes the stories to be literally true or not, the symptoms-such as flashbacks-cannot be ignored. 2 Lorna and Bill Goldberg. New house and offices. Lorna and Bill Goldberg are delighted with their move to a new house in Englewood (NJ), a mere fifteen minutes from their former residence, but nearer to New York via the George Washington Bridge. They now have room enough for two offices, which were badly needed since they both see numerous ex-members of various cults in consultation on a regular basis. The Goldbergs plan to participate in the regional conference on cults of the NY/NJ branch of CAN in April. Arnold Markowitz is the chairman, and among the scheduled speakers are several who are affiliated with both CAN and AFF. 3 Dr. Ronald Enroth. His book "Churches that Abuse", nominated for Christianity Today's Book of the Year Dr. Ronald Enroth is once again in the news. His book, Churches that Abuse, has been nominated for "Book of the Year" in the Christianity Today Readers'Choice Book Awards. According to the Westmont College (CA) student newspaper The Horizon News, the book is among 32 so nominated by publishers, and the results will be announced in April. Dr. Enroth's book, says the article, "has been a controversial item for cult leaders and members. The Piecemakers, a California-based group (see story, page 5) which has recently faced opposition in Monument, Colorado for attempting to relocate there, is one of the organizations Enroth highlights in his book. 'If Jim Jones was a 10, Piecemakers is an 8,' said Enroth. 'If you spend time as I have with a handful of ex-members, you can see that this group has done incredible damage to vulnerable people'." His current project is a book tentatively titled Recovering from Spiritual Abuse. 4 Dr. Robert Cialdini, Keynote speaker CAN conference, "The Powers of Ethical Influence" Dr. Robert Cialdini was a keynote speaker at the November CAN conference in Los Angeles, whose talk on "The Powers of Ethical Influence" was a marked success according to those who heard him. The presentation, accompanied by slides, was based on his book Influence: The New Psychology of Modern Persuasion (William Morrow). The book has received considerable praise for its humor as well as its fifteen years' worth of scientific study of the persuasion process. 5 Carol Giambalvo, "Exit Counseling" in its second edition. Lecture "How Cults Do It" with Sandy Andron. Boston Movement. Carol Giambalvo, who also attended the CAN conference, found in it "an exciting opportunity to see old friends," as well as to share information. Her book, Exit Counseling: A Family Intervention (AFF, 1992), is doing very well in its revised second edition, and it has been the subject of inquiries by distributors in Australia, she's happy to report. In January, Carol and Sandy Andron shared a four-hour presentation to faculty and resident assistants at Florida International University in Miami. Among the attentive audience of 75 were school psychologists, heads of departments, and leaders in student affairs. Their subject, illustrated by videos, was the generic one, "How cults do it," with particular emphasis on the Boston Movement which is currently generating headlines and serious scrutiny in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area. 6 Dr. Paul Martin's book: Cult-Proofing Your Kids. Dr. Paul Martin's new book, Cult-Proofing Your Kids, to be published by Zondervan, is excerpted in adapted form by Christian Counseling Today (January,1993), a publication of the American Association of Christian Counselors. In the excerpt, Dr. Martin lists "eight characteristics of cults that help parents spot danger," before children can be lured into cults. His book also tells how former cult members can be helped to recover from cult involvement. Dr. Martin is also quoted, in an unusually lengthy article, "Do You Believe in Magic? New Light on the New Age," on the "New Age Gurus" and some of their followers, in Family Circle magazine (February, 1993). In response to a question about why affluent, well-educated baby boomers follow a "Pied Piper like J. Z. Knight [a.k.a. Ramtha]," he says, "People are lonely, disillusioned, and looking for a sense of belonging. New Age groups offer a community . . ." Further, to the question "Why New Age and not, say, Presbyterianism?," Dr. Martin answers, "Presbyterians don't put on a show. New Age has more spiritual pizzazz and panache." The authors of the excellent article conclude, after detailing the actual multibillion-dollar business resulting from the New Age's "worldly materialism", "Perhaps it's not so much a New Age as a New Market." ================================================================= If this is a copyrighted work, you are acknowledging by receipt of this document from FACTNet that on the basis of reasonable investigation, you have not been to obtain a copy elsewhere at a fair price, and that you are and will abide by the following copyright warning.
