They invite prospective members to courses on "bioenergetics" and "biodance" and also recruit adolescents at video arcades. LUS was created in 1984 in La Plata by Brazilian Valentina de Andrade and her first husband, the medium Roberto Oliveira. The group believed that the end of the world would come in 1986, with extraterrestrial space ships saving only the sect's followers. Members practice black magic and wear robes reminiscent of those worn by the Ku Klux Klan for some of their rituals. LUS considers children to be a reincarnation of evil, especially if they were born after 1981. To become a member, one must abandon one's children. The death of a 7-year-old with mutilations and signs of satanic sacrifice, as well as the disappearance of an 8-year-old, have been linked to LUS. Both 60-year-old Valentina and her present husband, 38-year- old Jos~ Alfredo Teruggi, are being sought by police in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. De Andrade had written God, The Big Farce, claiming that God does not exist, and that Jesus is an extraterrestrial. The group has about 300 followers and their beliefs are spreading in Argentina and Brazil. 2 Argentina: Las 8 Reinas [A Better World, Queens of the Night, Juan Aftredo Unger] Juan Aftredo Unger, leader of "Las 8 Reinas" (also known as "A Better World" or "Queens of the Night," has been charged with corrupting minors and has been imprisoned after evading the law for 18 months. Charges of perverse sexual conduct and physical abuse of women and children have also been filed against Unger. 3 Argentina: When Paradise Is Hell, by Alfredo Silletta, Hispanic Cult Guide. Sectas, Cuando el paraiso es un infierno (Sects: When Paradise is Hell), published by Ediciones Meriditn in Argentina, is a general guide to the world of cults in Argentina and the Hispanic world by Argentine journalist Alffedo Sllletta. The book, written for the layperson, contains sections on the psychology of involvement, ways of extricating individuals from cults, and summaries of the histories of some 25 groups active in Argentina aimed to educated parents and teenagers about the risks cults pose. 4 Canada: Scientology Organization Accused of Seeking to be "Judgment-Proof" The Church of Scientology was accused in a Toronto court in November of having tried to make its Toronto corporation judgment-proof following a 1991 jury libel award of $1.6 million against the church. Robert Armstrong, who represented a senior Ottawa Crown attorney in his case against Scientology, told the appeal court that the sect's Los Angeles-based international office was apparently responsible for more than $6 million in mortgages placed on the Yonge Street offices of the Church of Scientology of Toronto within weeks of the jury award. He asserted that the mortgages, ostensibly to pay legal fees associated with the libel case and a pending criminal trial, encumbered the Toronto organization's assets "to the extent that there is essentially nothing left."
