And an international group of child welfare experts, who visited a foundation orphanage, expressed grave concern over the "isolation of the children and the indoctrination they are being subjected to." The foundation was awarded government contracts for the orphanages, along with exclusive adoption rights, beating Muslim and Greek Orthodox groups. A UNICEF official said the visiting welfare team was particularly upset by the isolation of the children and the high-powered indoctrination program. He has forwarded their letters of complaint to the Albanian authorities but has so far received no response. He said: "The government" (of the predominantly Muslim nation) has signed away its sovereign rights over its own citizens. It is a very fishy contract with some terrible clauses and the authorities have been trapped into signing it. The need in this country is so great, especially in the institutions where there is no food, no heating, and no nappies for the babies. If someone comes along with a smile on his face and a Bible under his arm offering to help, the authorities look upon him as a blessing, a godsend. They cannot know what his real motivation is." (From "Orphans find salvation -- at a price," by Eileen MacDonald, The European, 10/22-25/93, 4) 2 Germany: Cultic Groups' Drive to the East Continues [Unification Church, Scientology, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses] While mainstream churches are making little headway in the former East Germany, newer sects, and cults, are flourishing. In Leipzig, Unification Church members are working the university, while Scientology's Dianetics Centre is very active, including economic deals which have raised particular concern. Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses add to the mix. The new groups do not try to recruit the embittered workers, who are fertile ground for the far-right, but rather concentrate on students disoriented by the social revolution. Indeed, a Hare Krishna devotee says the movement gave him a sense of purpose after the old regime crumbled. Moonies interviewed seemed happy to be following the Rev. Moon's way - they say he is the Messiah- and laugh at charges they are brainwashed. But one former member says she was made into a "modern-day slave" by the group. (From "The East gets some spice in its sects life," by Philip Sherwell, The Sunday Telegraph [London], 12/6/92, 17, cited in FAIR NEWS, Winter 1992-93, 3) 3 England: Scientology Fishing for Dirt . . . [Prozac] The Citizens Commission on Human Rights, a Scientology front, has placed small ads in a Bournemouth local paper asking: "Prozac -- Know of Any Adverse Side Effects? Contact Citizens Commission on Human Rights, P. O. Box 1546, Poole, Dorset." And "Know of any suffering due to psychiatric treatment? Contact Citizens Commission. . . etc." "Those who are familiar with cults instantly recognize the advertiser as a Scientology organization. But who else does! The Bournemouth Evening Echo reports that a Dorset Health Authority spokesman urged patients not to take part in the inquiry instigated by the advert campaign. . . . Scientology is vehemently opposed to psychiatry and has conducted expensive campaigns against the manufacturers of Prozac [a widely prescribed tranquilizer which Scientology continues to attack, despite its approved use, after a special study, by the American Food and Drug Administration]." (FAIR NEWS, Winter 1992/3, 8-9) 4 Mexico: TM Proposed for Schools, Government The Governor of the northern Mexican state of Tamulipas Manuel Cavazos Lerma, an economist who practices meditation, mind control, and yoga, said in April that disciples of Hindu guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi would teach state employees meditation. In addition, grade schools and universities would offer mandatory courses on "The Awakening of the Conscience" beginning in the fall, the daily El Norte reported. But the Catholic church objected; "Humans are free beings, they are not robots," said Bishop Raymundo Lopez Mateos," about the governor's plans.
