She gave them her address and telephone number and came back with some booklets. Now the mother is worried about the daughter picking up the telephone, in case the caller is one of the COG people. The groupÕs missionaries generally hand out comic-style leaflets and rather crude multi-colored posters, often with an end-time message on the back. We supplied some COG information to a studentsÕ chaplain in Oxford. Apparently COG is targeting colleges with its posters. Rabbi Said to ÒDeprogramÓ Jews for Jesus Recruits An orthodox rabbi in London has been accused of ÒdeprogrammingÓ converts to the Jews for Jesus as he tours the country trying to counter stepped-up proselytizing by the American-financed group through his Operation Judaism. The New Statesman calls the conflict with the Jews for Jesus Òa struggle for the soul of the Jewish community.Ó Hubbard Book Display The prestigious London bookstore Foyles has combined with New Era publications, which concentrates on books produced by the Church of Scientology, and mounted an exhibition early in the year Òin honour of L. Ron Hubbard (the founder of Scientology) for the achievement of 100 million books in print.Ó Apart from the books, an E-meter (a lie-detector-like Scientology counseling device) and numerous brochures were also on display. Soccer Players Cošpted by Scientology Scientology succeeded in February in recruiting members of the Arsenal, Brighton, and Portsmouth professional soccer teams to pose for publicity pictures for ScientologyÕs ÒSay No to DrugsÓ campaign. Later, the Brighton manager said they were Òsucked in naively.Ó Response to Scientology Questionnaires The Swindon Evening News (in Wiltshire) has decided not to accept any more material from the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation after carrying a Scientology personality questionnaire as a supplement. Local clergy have warned about the questionnaires and the possible untoward consequences of filling them in. A Scientology spokeswoman said that the group always asked for peopleÕs telephone numbers. ÒWe ring them to tell them the test results. Then they can come down, have a coffee, see a video on Dianetics in the light of what their results show up.Ó The clergy of East Grinstead, where Scientology headquarters is located, have issued a warning circular which includes quotes from A Piece of Blue Sky, by Jon Atack, a recently published book highly critical of Scientology. TM Prison Ban Lifted A 1976 ban on use of Transcendental Meditation in prisons has been lifted. A TM spokesman said that if the meditation was practiced for 20 minutes twice a day for six months, the Home Office would save £5 million for every 1000 prisoners if they were all taught the techniques. The program would cost £5000 for each inmate and negotiations between the Home office and TM continue. A parliamentary penal affairs group, at a loss as to how to deal with offenders, seems ready to look at alternatives to traditional prisoner programs. ================================================================= If this is a copyrighted work, you are acknowledging by receipt of this document from FACTNet that on the basis of reasonable investigation, you have not been to obtain a copy elsewhere at a fair price, and that you are and will abide by the following copyright warning.
