Hill now receives $2.1 million. The church says it will appeal. (From ÒJudge adds $500,000 to record libel award,Ó by Tracey Tyler, Toronto Star, 3/12/92, D-26) FBI Probed New Alliance Party The New Alliance Party, currently running Lenora Fulani for president on ballots in states across the nation, was the subject of FBI investigations beginning during the 1988 primary elections, according to thousands of pages of documents released at the time under the Freedom of Information Act. The FBI warned that the NAP should be considered armed and dangerous. NAP critic Chip Berlet said he has no evidence to confirm that the group is, in fact, armed and dangerous, and says, ÒAs much as I disagree with Fulani and her philosophy, this [investigation] drives a stake into the heart of the Bill of Rights.Ó (From ÒCapitolism: NAP Time,Ó by Kelvyn Ander-son, Washington City Paper, 3/6/92, 13-146) California Ritualistic Child Abuse Law A bill to set up a Task Force on Ritualistic Child Abuse (Senate Bill 1771) is working its way toward approval in the California legislature. The bill states that there is pervasive denial of a very real problem. Because of lack of state funds, proponents are seeking private funds to support the work of the prospective task force in 1993. (Cult Observer Report, 7/30/93) Cult Awareness Network Scientology Suits Having denied in Boston Federal Court that it refused a Scientologist membership because of his affiliation with the church, the Cult Awareness Network is now faced with a suit by an African American Scientologist who says in federal court for the Central District of California that he has been prevented from joining CAN because of racial discrimination. (Cult Awareness Network News, June 1992, 3) Faith Healer Sentenced Hindu faith healer Raman Bachchan and his wife Deepshika were sentenced to seven years in prison by a New Jersey court in March for theft by deception and for swindling followers out of more than $246,000 in cash and jewels. Raman is also charged with sexual assault and criminal sexual contact for acts which occurred during a healing session. (Newsletter of the National Council Against Health Fraud, Mar./Apr. 1992, 4) GrandparentsÕ Visitation Law Some Florida grandparents are lobbying for legislation that would make it easier for them to see their grandchildren even if this is against the wishes of the childrenÕs parents, the grandparentsÕ own offspring. Some of those urging such legislation have children and grandchildren living in religious sects such as End Time Ministries, in Lake City.
