Cazares said the outcome showed that Òtheir tactic of trying to silence their critics and enemies by threats of suits under the hate crimes law is a tactic that will not work.Ó The suit, which the ScientologistsÕ attorneys say will be amended and reintroduced, accused Cazares of launching a long and ÒscurrilousÓ attack on Scientology Ñ when he learned the two church members were in the meeting Ñ in violation of a law that prohibits advertising that people are not welcome at an establishment because of their religions. Cazares, who has opposed the presence of Scientology in Clearwater ever since he was mayor more than a decade ago, says he expects his antagonists to pursue the case. ÒI think they are hoping to hurt me politically. I think itÕs a political action, and I think it backfired.Ó (From ÒSuit against Cazares rejected,Ó by Curtis Krueger, St. Petersburg Times, 6/27/92, 3) Collecting From Alamo The U.S. District Court in Nashville has ruled that the Internal Revenue Service may not place liens on property owned by two corporations once controlled by former cult leader Tony AlamoÕs foundation. The judgment opens the way for former Alamo follower Robert A. Miller, and others, to collect on a judgment from a 1990 civil action which awarded them damages for physical and psychological damages suffered while associated with the Alamo organization. (Cult Observer Report, 7/30/92) ÒEnd TimeÓ Reversals and Convictions The Florida Supreme Court has thrown out the murder convictions of William and Christine Hermanson, members of the End Time Ministries, of Lake City, FL, whose comatose 7-year-old daughter died after they treated her with Òspiritual healing.Ó It was the first time a stateÕs high court has overturned the criminal convictions of parents who cited religious beliefs in denying a child medical care. The court said Florida law did not give the couple Òfair warningÓ that they could be prosecuted if they relied solely on prayer. Also reversed was a probation stipulation that the parents seek conventional medical care for their other children. (Lake City Reporter, 7/3/92, 1, 2) Only three days after Hermanson decision, two other End Time parents, Guillermo and Luz Hernandez, were found guilty by a Live Oak jury of felony child abuse, nearly two years after their severely handicapped daughter died of pneu-monia without medical care.
