We also are seeing a growing number of smaller groups, often the so-called ÒpsychotherapyÓ groups or small church extended family situations. Most often, the victims of these groups are not fresh-out-of-college late adolescents, but rather stable 35- to 45-year-old adults with ties to their communities, regular employment, and seemingly established lifestyles. Frequently, these people have children who are brought into the group or over whom a large custody battle is waged. ÒOne woman came to us realizing that her husband of 12 years was in a destructive religious/psychotherapy group, and she began to fear that she and her two children were in danger. She is now in a protracted divorce and custody battle. Another womanÕs husband returned from two weekend workshops with a psychotherapy group and left their 26-year marriage. A third woman became intensely involved with an unlicensed therapist and ultimately a group of the therapistÕs clients and has cut off all ties with her close-knit family over the past couple of years. In another case, a man came to the clinic worried about his wifeÕs and eight childrenÕs involvement with a small church run by another family member. Because these groups are not well known, it often takes family members a long time to identify the group as destructive. As a result, the situation is frequently deeply entrenched by the time family members contact our clinic. However, we are able to be helpful to these clients as well.Ó (From ICCC Update (Interfaith Coalition of Concern About Cults), Spring 1992, 3) ================================================================= If this is a copyrighted work, you are acknowledging by receipt of this document from FACTNet that on the basis of reasonable investigation, you have not been to obtain a copy elsewhere at a fair price, and that you are and will abide by the following copyright warning.
