Like many organizations, it was started by a small handful of people on a shoestring. Now we are trying to go beyond that, but without the resources to hire a core administrative staff. We must rely on volunteers, but we have not been very effective in using volunteers. We would like those who wish to help to understand why. Some volunteers feel they are being ignored because we have not taken advantage of their offers of help. We are not ignoring them. We can not, for example, distribute documents which desperately need proofreading until we have the staff to identify such documents, queue them up for the volunteers, distribute them (how?), receive and evaluate the corrected documents, and replace the old version with the new version on the BBS -- taking all security and quality control considerations into account along the way. We do not yet have that staff. We have not yet located software that will view and print multi-page .TIF files (the format that results from our scanning and OCR procedure). We could export each page to a single page image file format (.TIF or .PCX) and print each page, one at a time, from an image file viewer, and mail each page to proofreader volunteers, but we don't yet have a laser printer and even if we did that procedure is too laborious to be feasable. We could distribute image files, and the text that needs to be proofread, on diskette or QIC-80 tape to volunteers able to make their own image file printouts. All the same problems mentioned above apply, plus the time necessary to locate the image files, copy them, and ship them. So it's not that we're ignoring potential volunteers or discounting their value. We need them, but the handful of people who are doing everything now cannot take on this additional administrative responsibility. I used proofreading as an example. Similar problems could be described for other work for which volunteers are desperately needed. Some jobs, such as editing documents produced by FACTNet for style and grammatical accuracy, could be done by e-mail. The same is true for original writing jobs, such as writing technical documentation for the BBS or "bulletins" to assist and orient new callers. It's a "catch 22." We desperately need help with the work, but we can't use the help until enough has been accomplished to produce a steady stream of revenue to pay the staff to provide work for the volunteers who can..... We ask for your patience (and your financial contributions). We desperately want to involve many other people, but we do not yet have the means to do so. Hang in there, and as we solve these problems YOU will become a part of FACTNet. The positions listed below are "computer commuting" positions which require a computer and modem. These may evolve into paid staff positions, but right now we are asking for volunteers. As described above, there may not be much room even for volunteers until we can provide the administrative structure to coordinate their activities. The point of this list is so you will know what positions will be available at FACTNet when we are able to take advantage of them. Think about your interests, your background and abilities, and what you would like to do. Any position may start out as a part time volunteer position. As FACTNet becomes fully funded, it may become a paid part or full time position at a salary or commission commensurate with nonprofit industry and market standards. To apply, send your resume and, where applicable, samples of your work as well as any other factors or information that will make this position a good match for you and FACTNet. Send your application to FACTNet's executive director at 601 16th St. #C-217, Golden, CO 80401, USA. (The following list is in no particular sequence.
