Talkative talk-show queen gets put in place JUDGE TELLS SALLY JESSY: HUSH UP! SOMEONE has finally told Sally Jessy Raphael to shut up. The talk-show star -- who loves to put her own guests on the hot seat -- met her match in a no-nonsense judge while testifying in a court case in- volving the Church of Scien- tology. Sally started out by confi- dently lecturing the jury and interrogating lawyers who were supposed to ask her questions. Finally, Judge Melinda Morris stunned the Ann Ar- bor, Mich., courtroom by tell- ing Sally to knock it off. "Put yourself in the posi- tion of people you ask ques- tions of on a show," she stern- ly reprimanded Sally "Wait until you are asked." Later, tears welled up in Sally's eyes as she was grilled by the opposing attorney "It's intimidation," she said while choking back sobs. "I'm not familiar with all this. You know how to intimi- date a woman. "You're a very prying pros- ecutor. I'm fired and terribly nervous." Raphael is among several defendants named in an on- going $72 million lawsuit in- volving the Church of Scien- tology. Church staff member Doro- thy Dickerson, 61, claimed Sally Jessy invaded her priva- cy and left her an emotional wreck in 1991 when a conver- ____________________________ Judge Melinda Morris reprimanded Sally Jessy. ____________________________ sation between Dickerson -- the subject of a show segment titled "How Scientology Ruined My Life" -- and her children was secretly recorded by Ra- phael's camera crew and broadcast on the show. Sally's grueling 2 1/2 hours on the stand began when she sounded off to the jury about the importance of the case. Then, after telling the packed courtroom that she has an IQ of 220 and decades of experience as a journalist, the 51-year-old talk-show host added that she'd even skipped a show taping to vol- untarily appear in court. At one point, Judge Morris told Sally that when an attor- ney raises an objection, she should stop talking. "I'm sorry," Sally Jess apologized. When Sally began talking about a segment of her show that had nothing to do with the case, the plaintiff's attor- ney, Robert E. Logeman, re- minded her: "I want you to answer questions. This is not a show!" Sally's attorney, Davis Freeman, advised her: "Sal1y, you're not allowed to ask questions." When Sally's testimony strayed again, the fed-up judge ordered her to follow court rules. "I'll only say this once be fore I take further actions," warned Judge Morris. During a break in testimo- ny, the TV star said outside the courtroom: "You must de- fend the public's right to know. "You fight a lot of little bat- tles one at a time." She added that the lawsuit was an attempt by the Church of Scientology to silence me- dia critics. "If they cause enough dis- comfort, people will not do shows on Scientology," she of- fered as an explanation. When Sally's testimony ended, she was whisked away in a limo to the airport to re- turn to New York. ================================================================= If this is a copyrighted work, you are acknowledging by receipt of this document from FACTNet that on the basis of reasonable investigation, you have not been to obtain a copy elsewhere at a fair price, and that you are and will abide by the following copyright warning.
