        On August 31, 1994, I left work in Niwot and drove my Volkswagen 
to Business Copy Center in Boulder, arriving there about 5:20 p.m.  My
business with them took five or ten minutes.  Arriving at the door of my
car, I saw a man in front of the car about ten feet away.  He smiled
pleasantly and said, "You're Father Jerry, aren't you?"

        The man did not look familiar, but then several hundred people 
whom I do not know know me.  I was trying to think in what parish I
might have met him, or whether I knew him through church camp, or some
other organization.  Some of the people I deal with frequently in the
church and some of those I work with call me "Father Jerry", but other-
wise, those who know me only slightly seldom call me that.  Thus I was
thinking this must be someone with whom I had worked or with whom I had
been associated in the past.

        He began with a few pleasantries, "How have you been?  How are 
you doing?", and so on.  I was still trying to place him.

        Then he said, "Are you familiar with Cult Awareness Network?"
I said, "I believe so."

        "Are you a member of Cult Awareness Network?"  

        I said, "No, I am not."

        He said, "I understand that you are working for FACT Net, with 
Bob Penny.  How did they persuade you to work with them?  Did they 
recruit you somehow?"

        I said, "I wanted to give them a hand, so I did."

        He said, "Are they paying you?"

        I answered, "I don't wish to say one way or another.  I believe
that is none of your business."

        He said, "I think it will be when tax time comes.  Let me give
you my card."

        The card read:  Russell Andrews.  Private Investigator.  National
Litigation Support Investigations.  Privacy Protection Specialist.  Triwest
Services.  License No. 413824.  510 SW Third Avenue, Suite 400.  Portland,
OR 97204.  (800) 260-3484.

        With that I smiled pleasantly and said, "Well, it's time for me to
be going."  I got into my car and drove away.

        I presume he had followed me from Niwot, although I was not aware
that anyone was following me.  It seems less likely he could have had
any way of knowing that I was headed for Business Copy Center.  My 1966
battered Volkswagen is easy to recognize.  

        His stiff, fake, pleasant manner reminded me of the warped 
personalities I have encountered among Scientologists, but he gave 
no indication of what cult he represented, if any.  I regret not 
having had the presence of mind to have followed him after we parted.

        Someone who himself or herself calls me "Father Jerry" must have
called me that in his presence.  At least that seems rather likely.
