Magazine, December 1993 backchat More Cruise Control I highly commend Rod Lurie for a well-researched and fac- tual story about Tom Cruise and the absolutely rotten judg- ment Mr. Cruise made by allowing himself to be bally- hooed as a Scientology role model ["No More Mr. Nice Guy," Oct.]. I don't know whether it is appropriate to curse Cruise for using his pub- lic image to induce young peo- ple to join Scientology or feel sorry for a man who has been engulfed in the web of deceit and control that Scientology has maintained over so many innocent lives. I'm also shocked David Geffen would stand up for Cruise in obvious ignorance of the church's view of gays, whom its messianic figurehead, L. Ron Hubbard, judged as "criminal psychotics." As a gay man myself who engaged in a number of "therapies" in Scien- tology to cure me of "psy- choses," I was left to feel that the only other option I had to a Scientology cure was to com- mit suicide. Society has come to expect and demand a certain level of responsibility from celebrities who choose to promote their own religious and moral con- victions, and Cruise should be judged culpable for any dam- age he causes in inducing young fans to a deceptive and destructive process. Garry Scarff Orlando, Florida I guess some folks just have to yap at the heels of the suc- cessful. So, very obviously, Tom Cruise is doing a whole lot of something right. Why don't we hear about that? And Tom is right about one thing-- his religious preferences are nobody's business. Mankind is littered with re- ligious intolerance. This is America, Rod. The same Con- stitution that protects freedom of speech provides freedom of religious choice. Susan Hodge Los Angeles Rob Reiner was able to sum it up in a few words: "If Scientology means you're the way Tom Cruise is, then every- one should be a Scientologist." Beth Shaffer-Ludwig Glendale Lose-Lose Proposition Being a graduate of Venturn High School in 1992, I can at- test to the fact that the behavior of Coach Harvey Kochel was no secret ["Winning," Nov.]. His actions were well known by the faculty and staff of the school as well as the commu- nity. People were willing to turn their backs on what they knew was wrong in the interest of the game of football. Every person on the staff of the high school who could have put an end to Kochel's 20-year reign of terror should be ashamed of themselves. Derek M. Mason Newport Beach You included a quote attrib- uted to me: "in fact, the worst penalty Kochel ever received was a one-day suspension with- out pay in May 1988--and that was only for 'leaving a stu- dent teacher in charge of his class without the teacher knowing where he was or how to contact him. And even then, he was asked to pick a day most convenient to himself.'" I did not make this statement to writer Ivor Davis, and he has since acknowledged that it did not come from me. Helena T.
