Last August 1992, I left the Church of Scientology where I've been a member since 1982. I was on staff at the Portland Mission of Davis in 1984, and was an operative for the church for approximately two years, working closely with Eugene Ingram, a licensed private investigator in Los Angeles, whose sole income is derived from the Church of Scientology. Eugene Ingram has been the instigator of many complaints against your client, on behalf of the Church of Scientology, who seeks to ruin Ford Greene on a personal and professional basis because of his activities in the Cult Awareness Network, his past public comments about Scientology, his past representation of ex-Scientologist clientele, and his current working relationship with Gerry Armstrong, a former high-ranking official of the Church of Sciento16gy. The operations against Ford Greene, as well as other CAN officials, are coordinated by the Church of Scientology, International, in Los Angeles, though specific operations of surveillance and "fact-finding" are the responsibility, in the case of Ford Greene, of August Murphy and Roger Stodola of the San Francisco Org. I first met Ford at the National Cult Awareness Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in October 1987. There, I deve16ped a friendship with Ford, heaping high praise on him for his activities against cults, particularly the one he was once involved with, the Unification Church. Ford, later invited me to visit with him in San Anselmo. EventuallL, I spent the Ch~istmas holidays of 1987 with him and his family. Unknownst to Ford at the time, I was not the ex-Peoples Temple member/survivor of Jonestown, a hoax perpetuated in the Cult Awareness Network, but.a Scientologist under the influence of the organization to exercise an operation on Ford. During times that Ford was not in his office, or he was in the shower, I availed myself to his aonfidential legal records, legal files of hiS clients, a rolodex of his contacts, and photos of his office. Scarff\Scarff4 - letter pro Greene\Page.00002 page 2 Ford Greene At one point in my visit, Ford did challenge me and demanded to know whether I was a Scientologist. I didn't know at the time whether I had blown my cover or he was just fishing around. As I was instructed to do in preparation of my visit with Ford, I lied to Ford and feigned an emotional outburst complete with tears, screaming, and packing my bags to leave. The ploy worked as Ford apologized to me for questioning me. Following my visit with Ford, we kept in contact for several months. In early 1988, the month I do not recall, I received an angry letter from Ford because of references I had made to Unification Church attorney John Biermans, who subsequently published them in a book without my knowledge or consent. These references criticized the Cult Awareness Network and condemned a cult deprogrammer, Bob Brandeberry, for what amounted to a sexual assault on me in 1980. Ford was representing Bob Brandeberry at the time in a case involving the deprogramming of a Unification Church member, and John Biermans had been the subject of a deprogramming at one time by Ford, which has been discussed in at least two books. I recall, in Ford's letter to me, threatening to sue me. I believe I wrote him a response, in effect, challenging him to do so. (What Ford did not know at the time was that the Church of Scientology had copies of his legal files on Brandeberry. Copies of ~ these records were forwarded to John Biermans in the Unification Church. Shortly afterwards, I received a phone call from the Denver District Attorneys Office in this case, and provided a taped statement to the Denver Police on what knowledge I had of the case. I also turned the Denver and Portland Police on another defendent in this case, Diane Benscoter, who was subsequently arrested and charged with kidnapping.) In the Fall of 1990, officials of Scientology(s Office of Special Affairs, a re-dub of the Guardians Office, which coordinates the intelligence and the covert ~ overt operations against perceived enemies of the Church, decided to set into motion a deliberate plan, involving me, which would be used to indict members of the Cult Awareness Network for criminal and fraudelent behavior and activities. This operation was considered so key and important to the agenda of the Church, I received the personal counsel, support and encouragement of the highest officials in the Church, David Miscavige and Heber Jentzsch. I was assigned to work directly with Eugene Ingram who agreed to pay me $200. per day, plus expenses, for my time and effort. I would also receive the aid of the in-house law firm for the Church, Bowles & Moxon, on issues of legalities. The initial step in this plan was to produce a declaration on my behalf. A portion on this declaration dealt with Ford Greene (see Exhibit 1). Once I signed this declaration, 500+ copies were made and sent to all of the other Scientology orgs and missions throughout the U.S. to work with in their owr~ bases of operations. Beginning in December 1991, Eugene Ingram, myself, and church members under the direction of the OSA's Director, David Butterworth, with the assistance of attornies in Bowles & Moxon, set out on a plan to destroy the personal and professional credibility of Ford Greene and work to have him disbarred from practicing law. Operations which were discussed in my presence ranged from workable to wacky: (1) Create a public scheme denouncing Ford as a sex fiend - (a) Ford, allegedly had a sexual affair with one of his clients, Maryanne Wakefield, an ex-Scientologist. A plan was discussed for an agent to go to Florida and dupe Ms. Wakefield into a declaration which would be detrimental to Ford. Scarff\Scarff4 - letter pro Greene\Page.00003 page 3 Ford Greene (b) Ingram encouraged me to take my declaration a step further by ammending it to read that, during my visit to him in Christmas 1987, that Ford induced me to get drunk and stoned on marijuana, using it as an opportunity to forcibly sodomize me and forced me to orally copulate him. The declaration would state that I did not admit to this in my earlier declaration because Ford had threatened to send his drug dealer contacts to kill me if I said anything of the attack. (c) Ford once admitted to me that he had done social research on the gay community in San Francisco. Ingram wanted to expj(~ on that by paying a patron oC a S.F. bathhouse, where homosexual activity takes place, to provide a declaration stating that Ford Greene was a frequent patron of the bathhouse, that Ford Greene has the AIDS virus and was intentionally passing it to others, and that this patron would be promised money to go into hiding, if this situation became serious. (d) Ingram sought to eXPS(~ Qn what he called the "fuck buddy" relationship Ford has with Gerry Armstrong. One suggestion was to set Ford up with a new male client who would then provide a declaration swearing that Ford agreed to barter his legal services in return for sex. (2) Get Ford arrested on drug an~pornog~p_hy charges - (a) Ingram suggested I go to San Anselmo, enter Ford's office/apt. when he was not present, and plant cocaine and child pornography in his office desks, then inform the police of Ford's illegal possessions. (3) rnjure Ford Greene - (a) Ingram and others suggested tampering with Ford's car, including the severing of its brake lines. Ford has been known by those keeping him under surveillance to drive very fast. Severing his brake lines would produce a serious accident. When I told Ingram that it could also kill him, Ingram responded "There's no loss in a dead fag." (4) Have Ford disbarred for official misrepresentation - (a) Ford was, allegedly, videotaped speaking at a Cult Awareness Network Conference, during the same time he was supposed to have been involved in a court trial, which he was excused from because he was purportedly bedridden from injuries in an auto accident. (Ingram did, in fact, file complaints with the ABA and Calif. Bar Association on this matter). Scarff\Scarff4 - letter pro Greene\Page.00004 page 4 Ford Greene In August 1992, I left the Church of Scientology and made the decision to confer with the legal representatives of the Cult Awareness Network. Since September 1992, when I provided a declaration to CAN attorney, Daniel Leipold, I have provided my full cooperation to CAN and have availed myself to others whom have been the target of Scientology operations. I have spoken with Ford and have met, personally, with his assistant, Gerry Armstrong. I have pro~ided you copies of my declaration to CAN that reference my association with Ford Greene - Exhibit 2. I am writing this to you on behalf of Ford, and to assist him in any way I can in the context of the Scientology-instigated complaints against him. These complaints have been instigated and inflamed by Eugene Ingram, a well-known liar, swindler and thug with the integrity of John Gotti, who profits dearly from his efforts on the behalf of the Scientology organization. Ingram, in his official complaints, never identifies his relationship to the Church; if pressed, he will admit to working for attorneys representin~g "some" of the interests of the Church. What he truthfully fails to admitfthat his working relationship with the in-house law firm of Scientology, that of Bowles & Moxon, which is staffed by Scientologists, is part 6 parcel of the whole Scientology organization. Contacting Mr. Ingram is usually easy if you call the Church's Office of Special Affairs. I also want to state that I have observed nothing in the conduct or actions of Ford Greene to suggest any misbehavior or professional fraud. Admittedly, Ford and I are both "hotheads" and our relationship is as fine as sandpaper, but Ford does not deserve the deliberate questioning of his professional competence and integrity as an attorney, particularly when the fuel of these complaints are based on misrepresentation and outright lies. Please inform me if I can be of further assistance to you or your client. Attached are other documents for your information which may clarify for you my current affairs with the Church of Scientology.
