CLEARWATER — A 2-year-old boy nearly drowned Thursday afternoon at a motel used by members of the Church of Scientology, Clearwater police said.
Beau Jacob Karnovsky, 2, was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg late Thursday night, a nursing supervisor said.
He had been sustained on life-support systems after being rushed to Morton F. Plant Hospital, Cooper said.
The boy was in a pool at the Sand Castle Motel, 200 N. Osceola Ave., at about 5 p.m. when another child saw him, Lt. Charles Cooper said.
The child who saw the 2-year-old didn't get him out of the water because another of the 2- year-old's young siblings knew how to swim, so the older child didn't think anything was amiss, Cooper said.
It was later that someone got the child out of the water and began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, Cooper said. Paramedics arrived and immediately transported him to Morton Plant, he said.
Cooper said the boy had a baby sitter, but that Officer Ken Schmitt and Detective Ken Fairchild still were investigating.
