The Scientology-backed rehab promises addicts they can sweat out their demons in sweltering saunas. But critics charge that the organization is the devil itself. L. [...] Unfair aspersions against Scientology It is disappointing that an article highlighting a charity's alleged breach of Fair Trading regulations should focus on non-existent links with the Scientology religion ("Refugee volunteers tell of Scientology influence", January 17). The article quotes the founder of the Australian League of Immigration Volunteers, Gary Taylor, as saying Scientology was one of a few religions he had spent some time with as a younger man. Beyond that, the only link to Scientology is based on ...

Declaration of Robert V. Levine, Ph.D.

[...] 72. Guilt, shame, and separation constituted the social and psychological force that induced sustained, long-term commitment. Physical force, physical abuse and the fear of even greater abuse if one tried to escape were powerful deterrents to any attempts to leave. It could easily be argued that these coercions could have been sufficient to keep anyone from ever making an attempt to get out. There was, though, another level of forces exerted by Scientology that made leaving even more costly – ...

The Utah Legislature continued funding a Scientology-based treatment for police officers exposed to methamphetamine, despite a state-funded study that was unable to find a connection between the drug and officers' illnesses. As lawmakers were slashing funds for other state programs, they sidestepped public debate and appropriated $100,000 – enough cash for about 20 police officers to undergo the regimen of exercise, sauna time and large doses of antioxidants. The funding was added by Senate Republicans in the waning days of the ...

TAMPA, Florida (CNN) — Some Christian congregations, particularly in lower income, urban areas, are turning to an unlikely source for help — the Church of Scientology. Scientologists do not worship God, much less Jesus Christ. The church has seen plenty of controversy and critics consider it a cult. So why are observant Christians embracing some of its teachings? Two pastors who spoke recently with CNN explained that when it comes to religion, they still preach the core beliefs of Christianity. But ...
