Says sect drags out projects — Orangeville Citizen (Ontario, Canada)
Type: Press
Source: Orangeville Citizen (Ontario, Canada)
In regard to your article, “Scientologists appear before Mono council,” (April 14): I would like to point out that Scientology has a long history of dragging out construction programs. For example, their Super Power building in Clearwater Florida had its groundbreaking in 1998, yet the building has never yet been completed. The church made continuous statements that the project would be done “by the end of the year” and such, but it has never been completed. You can see more such ...

Flood of suggestions on how to solve disasters // Unfair aspersions against Scientology — Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)
Type: Press
Source: Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)
[...] Unfair aspersions against Scientology It is disappointing that an article highlighting a charity's alleged breach of Fair Trading regulations should focus on non-existent links with the Scientology religion ("Refugee volunteers tell of Scientology influence", January 17). The article quotes the founder of the Australian League of Immigration Volunteers, Gary Taylor, as saying Scientology was one of a few religions he had spent some time with as a younger man. Beyond that, the only link to Scientology is based on ...

Letters to the Editor // Saturday letters: The realities of Scientology are being distorted — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Once again you try to paint an ugly picture of a religious movement that has helped hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of people lead happy and successful lives. So let me address your latest falsehoods. My experience in Scientology has been incredible. I have been a member of the Church of Scientology since 1973. I met and married my husband while working for the church. I have raised two sons in the church. They are both practicing Scientologists. ...

Letters / Time for a fair go / A right to be heard — The Age (Australia)
Type: Press
Source: The Age (Australia)
[...] Time for a fair go AFTER many years of perusing the media on minority religions, I know how it works. Media feeds on media. Falsehoods are published, then taken to be fact and republished by other media. The disaffected minority who have left a religious group are treated as if they are experts on their former group. I have no information on the Exclusive Brethren apart from what I have read in newspapers, but I am willing to believe that ...

Type: Press
Source: Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)
You quote John Kaye's statement to Parliament about the former Scientology leader Marty Rathbun ("Intimidating and violent: defector", December 2). Mr Rathbun was removed from his position related to legal and public relations matters in the US in 1993, after having inexplicably deserted his post. He later returned and worked his way back into legal affairs. By 2002 his malfeasance became apparent and he was removed from any position of executive authority. The internal investigation leading to his removal also ...

I have known the staff at Golden Era Productions for well over 20 years, and I have to say that I really take offense to the article that Charlie Hand wrote Dec. 18 about the lawsuit against Golden Era. As someone who has visited Golden Era numerous occasions, I have met countless friendly, productive individuals who are dedicated to their chosen vocation and way of life. They are there because they are deeply committed to the social betterment programs they ...

Church of Scientology: We're being vilified [Letter from Cyrus Brooks presented as an article] — The Age (Australia)
Type: Press
Source: The Age (Australia)
Senator Nick Xenophon is a lawyer. So he understands the difference between allegations and facts. Yet when he spoke in the Senate on Tuesday night he presented unsubstantiated allegations as if they were factual evidence of what he labelled "criminal" behaviour. He spoke under Parliamentary privilege, so as to avoid the risk of defamation. But in the sense that he presented spurious allegations as if it were evidence, he abused the privilege that Parliament offered him. Advertisement: Story continues below This ...

For Times, an obsession trumps facts — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Author(s): Pat Harney
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
The American Heritage Dictionary (4th ed., 2009) defines "obsession" as "(a) compulsive, often unreasonable idea or emotion." There could be no better example to illustrate this definition than the Times' ongoing coverage of the Church of Scientology. Once again, the Times turns a deaf ear to any voices save those of a handful of disaffected former Scientologists — people who have admitted lying, suborning perjury and obstructing justice — because their falsehoods support the Times' compulsive and unreasonable views ...

Letters / Youth need more positive influences — Glendale News-Press (California)
Type: Press
Source: Glendale News-Press (California)
Youth need more positive influences Recently the newspaper talks about the difficulties of the youth going back to school. Fewer classes in the community college, fewer preschool and after-school programs and fewer cultural programs because the government can’t financially support these activities anymore. This can create the risk of a reduction of the education and culture in society, with the result of more youth hanging around on the streets, more drugs, gangs, etc. For years, as a member of the Church ...

Letters to the Editor // Don't overlook the good Scientology does — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Don't overlook the good Scientology does I think it is disgusting that you chose to tear apart Scientology and Scientologists. You discriminate against and attack a religion that has much to praise and respect. Have you actually taken a look at what local Scientologists do for their communities? Take Clearwater for instance. There is Criminon, a group of dedicated volunteers who work with criminals in jail to help them change their lives so that they will be worthwhile individuals when they ...

Letters to the Editor // Scientology story didn't give faith, its leaders a fair chance — Seattle Times
Type: Press
Source: Seattle Times
The Seattle Times recently printed a story about my church that originally was published in The St. Petersburg Times ["Report: Violence common among Scientology managers," seattletimes.com, Nation & World, June 21]. The story lays bare the bias that newspaper has against my faith, and with only a few quotes from Church of Scientology representatives, it didn't even vaguely give the appearance of a balanced report. It was a disappointment that The Seattle Times republished this biased story. The article uncritically ...

Letters to the Editor // Report lays bare the Times' bias against Scientology — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
The ''St. Petersburg Times June 24 editorial The abuse behind Scientology's facade proves beyond doubt that any aura of objectivity in the ''Times so-called "special report" was illusory. The report attempted to give the appearance of balance by quoting statements from Church of Scientology representatives, but the editorial exposes this exercise as a hollow pretense. The editorial uncritically accepts as true statements from a handful of former church staff without ever addressing their lack of credibility, their underlying motivations and the ...

Letters / Scientology displayed — Montreal Mirror

Scientology displayed [Re: Scientology on display, News, April 23] The only thing more disturbing than the Church of Scientologys presence in the atrium of the Concordia library last week is the university administrations laissez-faire attitude about the indiscriminate rental of its common spaces. Its completely inappropriate that Concordia spokesperson Christine Mota encourages members of the university community to get a grip and chill while access to our library is given over to anyone who can afford the price. The attention of ...

Letters // Concordia got it right — Montreal Gazette
Type: Press

Re: "Scientologists didn't deserve a soapbox" (Letters, April 22). Norman Ingram suggests that so called "crackpot" groups like the Scientologists should not be accorded publicly funded space like Concordia's atrium. But that is precisely what universities have a mission and an obligation to provide. Academic freedom and free speech have no point if offensive speech and crackpot ideas have no public forum. Every single university discipline has some ideas or promotes practices that will offend some portion of our population. Every ...

More: montrealgazette.com

Re: "Scientologists have a right to speak, too" (Editorial, April 19). Your editorial's plaintive title betrays a fundamental misapprehension of the issues involved. No one denies the right of Scientologists to say whatever they want, however wrong and untrue it might be. What some people are concerned about, however, is the fact that they are being given a publicly-funded, intellectual soapbox - the Atrium of Concordia University's library building - from which to make their crackpot claims. That is the issue. ...

More: leader-news.com

Whatever happened to "Just Say No to Drugs"? In every newspaper of significance, across the Internet and on the airwaves, arguments rage back and forth about the legalization of illicit drugs. Just months ago, the only drug under legalization scrutiny was marijuana. Now, legalization advocates have extended the argument to include cocaine and heroin, drugs that are much more often the target of rehabilitation stays. Arguments in favor of legalization offer such humanitarian benefits as "less drug-related violence," "less illness," "use ...

Letters: Scientologists could put money to better use — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)

Luxury lifts up church hotel March 22 story Money could go to better use In this time of recession, when people are losing jobs, houses are going to foreclosure and times basically are tough all over for everyone, it's nice to see the cult of greed spending $40 million on renovations to its lair — not for the good of the community or to help those less fortunate, but to add to its own excess. As a "religion" and a "church," ...

Who knew? I find these Anonymous letters brutal, unthinking, indecent and disrespectful to the religious beliefs of others. It is easy to say whatever you want to say, even if it’s untrue, if you don’t sign your name to it. Is it really possible to hold on to so much hatred and evil? Doesn’t Anonymous know that Scientology is expanding at a much faster rate than ever before? Yes, it’s true. In the last 20 years, churches, missions and groups in ...
