ST JOHN Ambulance is refusing to accept donations from the Church of Scientology. The announcement is another rebuff for the cult after Queen Victoria Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital also turned down proceeds from the cult's recent Saint Hill summer fete. John Mills, communications director of the volunteer organisation's London head office, said flatly: "We do not want to give credibility to an organisation of which we do not approve. It could bring the good name of St John ...

CONTROVERSY this week continued to cloud tomorrow's Saint Hill summer fete. Other groups have now denied links with the Church of Scientology event after Queen Victoria Hospital last week refused to accept cult money from the proceeds. Advertisements and flyers pushed through East Grinstead letter boxes say the fete, with John Travolta topping the bill, will be opened by Radio Mercury. But the station's programme director, Martin Campbell, denied it would attend the event at the organisation's headquarters. He stressed: "Radio ...

Scientologists and QVH Hospital says: We don't want anything to do with them WE HAVE noted, with some concern, an advertisement by the Church of Scientology for an event purporting to raise money for our hospital. This advertisement appeared without our knowledge or permission. We have written to this organisation asking them not to use our name in any way. Through this letter we would like to make clear that we have no relationship whatsoever with this organisation and will not ...

A SUMMER fete has sparked controversy between the Queen Victoria Hospital and the Church of Scientology. Hospital chiefs are seething over advertisements and flyers handed out to promote the event at the cult's Saint Hill headquarters which say money raised would go to the world-famous burns unit. But chairman of the hospital's trust, Jeffrey Park, told the Courier: "We would not accept the money." The hospital, he said, was "extremely annoyed" and "appalled" by the advertisements. Mr Park added: "We discussed ...

AN AMERICAN private eye working in East Grinstead has denied harassing residents. Eugene Ingram, 48, from California, has been investigating documents allegedly stolen from the Church of Scientology UK base at Saint Hill. During the past month he has approached some 150 people across the south east. Speaking exclusively to the Courier about his work, Mr Ingram said: "Apart from a couple of exceptions, everytime I've seen allegations of harassment there's no name to go along with it." "The question is ...

YOUR story Ex-Scientologists to 'Expose' Cult (March 4) completely missed the point. What your readers were not told is that the two Scientology "ex-members" in question have been involved in removing materials from church premises and using these for their own ends. The true story is this. Robin Scott and Ron Lawley engaged in a criminal conspiracy in 1983. In furtherance of' that conspiracy, Scott and others went to Denmark, entered a church using a subterfuge, and stole sacred religious scriptures. ...

A HUSBAND and wife team who help Church of Scientology members leave the controversial organisation say they have never been busier after a spate of national coverage surrounding the cult. The couple claim to have given advice to about 100 former cult members. But the spotlight has been thrown on them and their work by a spate of stories ...

POLICE were twice called to disperse pickets from outside the East Grinstead home of an anti-Church of Scientology campaigner. On Sunday, three Scientology members stood outside Jon Atack's house in Cranston Road. Mr Atack said they carried placards proclaiming: Stop destroying families. Get a proper job like the rest of us and Support your own family and stop destroying ours. "They were an absolute nuisance. I was incensed," he said. "They had no answer when I asked them which families I ...

The Courier has received a number of letters this week which are not being published because they are considered to be defamatory. —– Misdirected energy AS SPOKESMAN for the Church of Scientology I have only one thing to say to Mike Ricks (Letters, August 13), and that is that if he had spent as much time on improving conditions in town as he did in persecuting a religion, East Grinstead would be an even more pleasant environment to live and ...

Pinning our hopes on Old Doll Body I READ with interest Denise Harrison's statement of incredulity that a new religion could be the work of a science fiction writer. According to the saying, truth is stranger than fiction, so what about this one? In his early lectures, Ron Hubbard mentioned "Old Doll Body", a mythical figure from the past, who travelled freely in the universe in his flying saucer. In 1964, I was driving up the Turners Hill Road one night ...

A FELBRIDGE clergyman was this week branded "a Nazi" and accused of "religious persecution" after an incident at the Saint Hill Manor headquarters of the Scientologists as the row between cult members and established churches deepened. After dabbling... I still say stay away AT OUR monthly meeting held on Monday I asked how many of those who signed the letter from the clergy of East Grinstead (report and Letters, May 7) had visited Saint Hill. Four of us had. Our knowledge of Scientology is not confined to anti-Scientology literature, as Barbara Bradley seems to imply. Speaking for myself, I visited Saint Hill in September 1985. I have dipped into dianetics, which I admit did not interest me ...

CHURCH leaders in East Grinstead have joined forces in an unprecedented condemnation of the Church of Scientology. THE OPENING of the Hubbard Dianetics Bookshop in East Grinstead has caused concern in many quarters of the town because of the links with the Church of Scientology. Two local vicars have spoken out over the move, so has the headmaster of one of the town's secondary schools. They fear the shop will provide a front to encourage people, particularly the young, to take part in "personality testing" undertaken by the scientologists. Feelings ran high among campaigners outside the shop on ...

Why Christians oppose Scientology... IT SEEMS to me that those who defend Scientology fall into two categories: first of all, there are the Scientologists themselves, who will naturally present the acceptable face of Scientology; and then there are others, who through your columns have pleaded for tolerance and understanding. Taking the second of these, I would point out that Christians, in their condemnation of Scientology, do not hate Scientologists. We hate the evil which the cult enshrines rather than those who ...
