Prozac Frees Ex-Scientology Leader from Depression — Psychiatric Times
More: link, lermanet.com
Type: Press
Source: Psychiatric Times
A personal aide to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard for eight of her nearly 20 years with the group says that fluoxetine (Prozac) and therapy have finally stopped the depression and suicidal ideation she had suffered since 1976. "I have to speak out." Hana (Eltringham) Whitfield told The Psychiatric Times. "The Scientologists choose the most prominent psychiatrists and the most successful drugs to attack. That's why they attacked Ritalin, and that's why they are now attacking Prozac." Although ...

The Scientologists and Me — TIME Magazine
Type: Press
Author(s): Richard Behar
Source: TIME Magazine
Strange things seem to happen to people who write about Scientology. Journalist Paulette Cooper wrote a critical book on the cult in 1971. This led to a Scientology plot (called Operation Freak-Out) whose goal, according to church documents, was "to get P.C. incarcerated in a mental institution or jail." It almost worked: by impersonating Cooper, Scientologists got her indicted in 1973 for threatening to bomb the church. Cooper, who also endured 19 lawsuits by the church, was finally exonerated in 1977 ...

More: link
Type: Press
Author(s): Jack Durham
Source: Lumberjack (Humboldt State University, Arcata, California)
On a 3,000-acre ranch in rural Humboldt County, devotees of Church of Scientology-founder L. Ron Hubbard are building a 375-foot-long underground vault. The vault is being built on the Sunset View Ranch in Petrolia, a small town located about 20 miles south of Ferndale, by the Church of Spiritual Technology (COST). COST is linked to the controversial Church of Scientology, whose operations, according to court documents, include a lack of financial records, public policy violations, deceptive practices and the maintenance of ...

Mrs. Gariepy's difficult tale // Scientologist Buttnor, cleared of child abuse, says his former parishioner is out to get him — Alberta Report (Canada)
More: link
Type: Press
Author(s): Greg Heaton
Source: Alberta Report (Canada)
Police last month arrested Allan Anthony Buttnor, a minister and director of special projects for the Church of Scientology in Edmonton. They claimed he was working at the church offices last November 30 when he fondled the chest of a church member's 10-year-old daughter. They also alleged he had picked up the girl in his car near her home on March 7 and repeated the act. Last week, after a crown prosecutor told the court that there is no evidence to ...

The Scientology Story: The Making of L. Ron Hubbard // Burglaries and Lies Paved a Path to Prison — Los Angeles Times (California)
Type: Press
Author(s): Robert W. Welkos, Joel Sappell
Source: Los Angeles Times (California)
It began with the title of a fairy tale — Snow White. That was the benign code name Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard gave to an ominous plan that would envelop his church in scandal and send its upper echelon to prison, a plan rooted in his ever-deepening fears and suspicions. Snow White began in 1973 as an effort by Scientology through Freedom of Information proceedings to purge government files of what Hubbard thought was false information being circulated worldwide to ...
