CLEARWATER — With the Internal Revenue Service proclaiming them an official tax-free religion, the Church of Scientology had hoped to quickly launch a $42 million expansion downtown. But the city of Clearwater has put the church on notice that it might not be able to grow too fast. The six-story office tower and auditorium Scientologists plan to build across the street from their Fort Harrison Hotel may be so big that it qualifies as a "Development of Regional Impact" under the ...

CLEARWATER — City commissioners will appeal a controversial ordinance to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary, to ensure they can enforce it, the city's attorney on the case said Wednesday. "They [city commissioners] are resolved to pursue forward and fight," said attorney Alan Zimmet, who is handling the appeal. But further appeals of the ordinance, which would require churches to disclose how they spend money donated by church members, would be foolish, said Richard Haworth, spokesman for the Church of Scientology. ...

CLEARWATER — City commissioners decided Tuesday how they'll handle an ordinance opposed by the Church of Scientology but won't say what their decision was. Mayor Rita Garvey said attorneys working on behalf of the city have filed an appeal to a federal appellate court ruling that declared parts of the ordinance unconstitutional, but she did not elaborate. All five city commissioners offered "no comments" about the substance of their secret meeting and referred questions to attorney Alan Zimmet, who did not ...

Who says this isn't a religion? — Tampa Tribune (Florida)

Author(s): Neil Cote

CLEARWATER — One thing about the Church of Scientology: the folks in charge sure do things the hard way. For 40 years, they feuded off and on with the Internal Revenue Service, which viewed Scientology as a for-profit brain-washing racket instead of just another religion in want of federal tax exemptions. At times, the feuding got awfully ugly, with Scientologists getting sent up the river for burglary and other niceties that church people don't normally commit — well at least those ...

CLEARWATER — Church of Scientology officials are installing concealed cameras and microphones in at least 69 counseling rooms where church members reveal their innermost thoughts, a church spokesman confirms. What transpires behind the closed doors of an auditing session — one-on-one counseling — is as confidential as a confession from a parishioner to a priest in the Roman Catholic Church, said Scientology spokesman Richard Haworth. "It's subject to what's called the priest-penitent privilege," Haworth said. Occasionally, be said, sessions are videotaped ...

A PIECE OF BLUE SKY. By Jon Atack. Lyle Stuart. 428 Pages. $21.95. It has been 17 years since the Church of Scientology secretly bought the historic Fort Harrison Hotel and established a base for an important arm of the church in the city of Clearwater. And it has been nearly 10 years since critical public hearings — which detailed allegations of a slew of Scientology wrongs — captivated city residents for more than a week. The church professes to have ...

CLEARWATER — The Church of Scientology is facing another lawsuit in the midst of an expensive nationwide campaign to bolster its image. The sect, which maintains its spiritual headquarters in Clearwater, has spent millions of dollars in recent weeks for advertising in the newspaper USA Today. In the lawsuit, a former sect member claims the church is a fraud; owes him money for counseling services he never used; and has cut him off from his two daughters, who still follow Scientology. ...

Letters // Scientologists unfairly attack Prozac — Tampa Tribune (Florida)

Type: Press
Source: Tampa Tribune (Florida)
The June 1 letter on Prozac by Doug Johnston is another example of the campaign of misinformation that Scientologists are spreading on Prozac and other treatments prescribed by psychiatrists. Johnston refers to research carried out by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Hubbard initiated his "research" with the premises that all psychiatric treatment is damaging to all patients and that psychological problems can be dealt with only by training the mind to forget, using a form of self-hypnosis. He conveniently ...

CLEARWATER — No end is in sight in negotiations between Pinellas County and the Church of Scientology over the church's $5 million tax bill. Neither side would talk about the negotiations taking place in front of a court-appointed mediator. Mediator William Fleece adjourned the talks Monday, and the two sides may not meet again for months. "If we had reached something, obviously we wouldn't have adjourned," Pinellas Property Appraiser Jim Smith said. "I don't think we will lose anything by talking, ...

TAMPA — Scientologists filed 11 federal lawsuits Wednesday against the Internal Revenue Service seeking information about agency audits of them. The group claims the IRS has ignored its requests to obtain the records filed under the federal Freedom of Information Act and is asking the court to force the agency to turn over the documents. Among the things the lawsuits are seeking are the IRS audits and any instructions, memorandums or directives by the agency relating to the treatment of Scientologists. ...
