Author(s):
Bob Pratte Source:

Scientology officials want to close the road where it runs through Gilman Hot Springs, home to their Golden Era film and sound studios near San Jacinto.
Scientology leaders maintain that the busy, curvy road is too dangerous to carry traffic, but on Monday, the high road was one of the safest routes between the San Jacinto Valley and the world.
Like many ...

Metropolitan News-Enterprise (Los Angeles, California) A ballot initiative imposing a tax on millionaires to fund mental health services did not violate equal protection, this district’s Court of Appeal ruled yesterday. Reasoning that taxpayers earning more than $1 million annually do not comprise a “suspect class” requiring strict scrutiny analysis, Div. Two rejected a challenge to Proposition 63 by two La Canada Scientologists. Proposition 63 was passed in 2004 and expanded funding for mental health services for all Californians by imposing an additional tax of 1 percent ...

“There are no picketing incidents now or in the past that show the necessity of this ordinance in the County of Riverside,” said Julie Waltz, a county resident who has been a vocal critic of the measure since it was enacted in March.

The board approved the ordinance in March after months of debate and revisited it Tuesday to examine its impact. Former Supervisor Roy Wilson, who died last month, had requested the review.

Glendale News-Press (California) Youth need more positive influences
Recently the newspaper talks about the difficulties of the youth going back to school.
Fewer classes in the community college, fewer preschool and after-school programs and fewer cultural programs because the government can’t financially support these activities anymore.
This can create the risk of a reduction of the education and culture in society, with the result of more youth hanging around on the streets, more drugs, gangs, etc.
For years, as a member of the Church ...

Glendale News-Press (California) About 20 years ago a delegation from the church of Scientology came to my school and asked that I be fired from my position as a teacher (some might take note here of a recurring theme in my professional life). They had objected to a conversation I had with my students about a constitutional issue, and secondarily, about truth in advertising. Time magazine had just done a feature article about the organization, and it managed to make its way into a ...

Los Angeles Times (California) The Church of Scientology has had a bad couple of years, PR-wise. You could start the damage-control clock running in January 2008 with the release of the Scientology indoctrination video featuring Tom Cruise — you know, black turtleneck, eyes spinning — claiming that Scientologists are the only ones who could really help at an accident scene. This summer the church was tried for fraud in France. In May, Wikipedia said it would ban entries originating from Scientology IP addresses on account ...
