Says sect drags out projects — Orangeville Citizen (Ontario, Canada)
Type: Press
Source: Orangeville Citizen (Ontario, Canada)
In regard to your article, “Scientologists appear before Mono council,” (April 14): I would like to point out that Scientology has a long history of dragging out construction programs. For example, their Super Power building in Clearwater Florida had its groundbreaking in 1998, yet the building has never yet been completed. The church made continuous statements that the project would be done “by the end of the year” and such, but it has never been completed. You can see more such ...

Will the L. Ron Hubbard house turn a Camelback neighborhood into a Scientology recruitment Mecca? — Phoenix New Times
Type: Press
Author(s): Robrt L. Pela
Source: Phoenix New Times
On a recent December Sunday, on a still street nestled against Camelback Mountain, a party is in full swing at the L. Ron Hubbard House. It's meant to be a holiday open house, to show off the stunning renovation of the simple brick dwelling where Hubbard founded Scientology a half-century ago, and to smooth relations with neighbors, some of whom have lately been up in arms about plans to turn the house into a Scientology museum. These concerned neighbors, none of ...

Banner plane used to mark death of a Scientologist — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
[Picture / Caption: Towed by a small plane, this banner flies over downtown Clearwater Tuesday to commemorate the death of Scientologist Lisa McPherson.] There have been candlelight vigils and sidewalk pickets, but this year a small group of Scientology critics took their annual protest to the air, hiring a plane to fly over downtown Clearwater at lunchtime Tuesday with a banner that read: "Clerwater- Rember Lisa McPherson (sic)." McPherson was a 36-year-old Scientologist who died in 1995 in the care of ...

Tory Bezazian was a veteran Scientologist who loved going after church critics. Until she met the darkest detractor of all. Last year, Church of Scientology operatives received an alarming tip: During the upcoming 2000 MTV Movie Awards scheduled for June 8, a short South Park film parodying Battlefield Earth would feature the character Cartman wiping his ass with a copy of L. Ron Hubbard's sacred text, Dianetics. The tip was erroneous. Cartman would actually be wiping his ass with a Scientology ...

Scientology critics to get bricks — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
A group beautifying a Clearwater alley reverses course and will let donors memorialize a church member who died. CLEARWATER – Lisa McPherson will be memorialized in a downtown alley next door to a Church of Scientology building. A group that sold hundreds of engraved bricks to beautify the city-owned alley has reversed an earlier decision, deciding to allow a McPherson memorial brick and two other bricks submitted by Scientology critics. McPherson was a 36-year-old Scientologist who died in 1995 in the ...

Scientology critics plan protest this weekend — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Author(s): Deborah O'Neil
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
The annual event is restricted by a court order prescribing where the pickets can be. Police expect little or no friction. CLEARWATER – Critics of the Church of Scientology will take to downtown streets this weekend and march in a protest that has become an annual ritual. They will picket against a backdrop of special community events celebrating the holidays and the 10th anniversary of the Pinellas Trail. As it was last year, the protest will be tempered by a court ...

At home: Critics public and private keep pressure on Scientology — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Author(s): Lucy Morgan
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Scientology leaders say they want peace. They say they want to stay out of court. But with both foes at home and foes abroad, that goal may be elusive. Leaders of the Clearwater-based Church of Scientology say they hope the years of heavy legal expenses are over. That may not be a realistic hope. While the number of cases Scientology is currently pursuing is down in the United States, a survey of the cases still under way shows a persistence and ...

In response to the July 24 Post-Gazette news articles "Scientology Comes to Town": As a 60-year resident of Pittsburgh and a 20-year member of the Church of Scientology, I am compelled to set the record straight on your July 24 articles about Scientology. The article missed the help the church and its members are extending to millions around the world, including residents of Pennsylvania. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, were a rude awakening for everyone. For many of us, ...

Dissidents use computer network to rile Scientology — New York Times

Author(s): Mike Allen
Source: New York Times
ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 13 — The Church of Scientology is battling a band of on-line dissidents who have used the Internet to mail out globally its secret scriptures, for which some members must pay thousands of dollars. On Saturday, as a result of a copyright infringement lawsuit, United States marshals here seized the computer of a former church employee who had electronically posted a 136-page text that he said was available in court records. The former employee, Arnaldo P. Lerma, 44, ...

Scientologists and their critics are colliding in cyberspace. The critics started the fight, creating an electronic bulletin board dubbed alt.religion.scientology on the Internet, a worldwide web of computer networks with an audience pushing 25-million. Then they downloaded their knowledge and opinions in e-mail messages that just about anyone with a computer, a little money and a modem can view. "As you will see, Scientology is astronomically prohibitive," one anonymous writer said on a.r.s in a message that reprinted the church's price ...
