The Scientology Papers: Files show spy reported woman's intimate words — Globe and Mail (Canada)
Type: Press
Author(s): John Marshall
Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)
Freelance writer Paulette Cooper is a finely honed, long-haired accumulation of nervous energy. She was dressed with a New Yorker flair that seemed out of context in the small windowless room in the grey dignity of the U. S. District Court building in Washington.

The Scientology Papers: Hubbard still gave orders, records show — Globe and Mail (Canada)
Type: Press
Author(s): John Marshall
Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)
Toronto ON — L. Ron Hubbard, the former science fiction writer who publicly resigned in 1966 from leadership of the Church of Scientology, continued to give orders to its leaders into 1977, a Washington court has been told. Evidence obtained in 1977 in raids on U. S. offices of the cult by the Federal Bureau of Investigation revealed there was a detailed program to cover up Mr. Hubbard's involvement in the leadership of Scientology. Called Operation Bulldozer Leak, it was part ...

The Scientology Papers: Cult harassment, spying in Canada documented — Globe and Mail (Canada)
Type: Press
Author(s): John Marshall
Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)
New light has been shed on the Canadian operations of the controversial Church of Scientology by files made public by a U.S. District Court in Washington. The evidence refutes denials by Toronto cult leaders of information I reported more than five years ago in a series of articles based on internal cult documents and interviews with defectors. Other accounts since then of clandestine operations by the cult in Canada are also supported by the files, submitted in court after being seized ...

The Scientology Papers: Big FBI raid led to conspiracy trial of cult leaders Court hears of spying, theft of government files — Globe and Mail (Canada)
Type: Press
Author(s): John Marshall
Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)
About 100 agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation learned on July 6, 1977, that they would be participating two days later in an operation unprecedented in the United States. The notification, described two years later in a Washington court room, said the agents would be raiding offices of an organization that some governments, in the United States, Canada and elsewhere, officially classified as a religion — the Church of Scientology.

The Scientology Papers: Secret Ontario documents found in U.S. cult's files — Globe and Mail (Canada)
Type: Press
Author(s): John Marshall
Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)
Confidential documents from various Ontario Government offices including an attorney-general's communication about police intelligence operations have been found in U.S. Church of Scientology files. The documents were part of the evidence submitted by federal attorneys in the Washington prosecution of U.S. leaders of the cult on charges of conspiring to steal government documents and obstruct justice by cover-ups and by kidnapping an informer. Of 12 indicted, including two in Britain and the informer, nine have been tried, convicted and sentenced by ...

Directors from the Church of Scientology in Ontario and Alberta are seeking Government inquiries into its practices. One of them, Lorna Levett, was the head of the Scientology mission, a franchise operation in Calgary. After 12 years in the movement she walked out and took all but a few of her Calgary disciples with her. A Scientologist franchise, Mrs. Levett said, is a charter granted by the Scientology head office. The holder agrees to send 10-3/4 per cent of the ...

Narconon has been trying to make a name for itself since opening offices at 101 Montana avenue in June. It is described as a program to help drug addicts overcome the habit and to help prevent drug addiction. The executive director, Brent Davis, has been speaking to civic clubs to acquaint them with Narconon's efforts. PTAs and similar groups that have not yet heard the message have been offered speakers. THE OFFICE and classroom were donated for Narconon's use ...

Type: Press
Author(s): Rita Marshall
Source: The Times (UK)
The Government yesterday announced steps to curb the growth of scientology, the cult which has its world headquarters in 30 acres of Sussex countryside near East Grinstead. Mr. Robinson, Minister of Health, said in a written reply to Mr. Geoffrey Johnson Smith, Conservative M.P. for East Grinstead, yesterday that the Government had been increasingly concerned at its spread in this country during the past two years. He announced six steps to stop foreign students, teachers and administrative staff coming to study ...

Aboard the good ship Scientology — The Scotsman (UK)
More: link
Type: Press
Source: The Scotsman (UK)
Moored at South bridge, Edinburgh, everything aboard the "ship" was Bristol fashion yesterday. Communications, and people, flowed quickly and smoothly. The "vessel" is actually a converted hostel—Suttie's Hotel, 20 South Bridge—bought from the Y.M.C.A. In May, after redecoration and recarpeting by scientologists themselves, it became the Hubbard College for Personal Independence and the world centre for administration of, and instruction in, scientology's advanced courses. As befits the Sea Organisation, as the Advanced Organisation is known, the college has the air of ...
