TAMPA — The St. Petersburg Times has asked a federal judge to unseal four court files pertaining to the Church of Scientology. The files, which otherwise would be available to the public, were sealed in 1986 by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Kovachevich at the Scientologists' request. At the time the church was settling four lawsuits against it by former Clearwater Mayor Gabriel Cazares, among others, for undisclosed sums of money. The suits alleged that Scientologists invaded the plaintiffs' privacy and ...

CLEARWATER — The outbreak of measles reported by county health officials this week has been traced to the True School, a private school in Clearwater that uses the teachings of L. Run Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology. A Health Department official said Tuesday that 40 of the 100 students at the school had not been immunized. But Sherry Payson, a spokeswoman for the school, said she thinks the figure is lower. She said neither the school nor Scientology discourages ...

DUNEDIN — Authorities believe a man who drowned in Clearwater Harbor on June 30 was a Swiss man taking classes at the Church of Scientology in Clearwater. Dunedin police found the man's body along the shore off Victoria Drive. Clearwater police Lt. Jack Dowling said Peter Ernst Frei, a Swiss citizen, was reported missing to Clearwater police on June 29 by a church acquaintance. The description of Frei and his clothing matches that of the drowning victim, Dowling said. Dowling said ...

In the lingo of Wall Street, the Feshbachs are "short sellers," stock traders who make money betting that inflated share prices will drop. "Shorts" borrow stock and sell it on the open market. They make money by repaying their borrowings with stock that has cost them less to buy. A visit to Matt's office makes the Feshbachs' involvement in Scientology pretty clear. Along with statuary of triumphant bears - symbols of a declining stock market - his office is decorated with ...

The caller dialed in secret access codes to the computer, codes assigned to the building inspectors for reporting inspection results. According to the information the caller dialed into the computer about 11 p.m. April 14, a new art gallery in Clearwater had passed final inspections. But building officials became suspicious. The building inspector who supposedly did the inspections was on vacation when the calls were made. And the inspector had made no final inspections at the gallery. The secret computer access ...

"Our connection with the church is that it is the religion of the majority of our staff," says David Riggin, [David] Singer's marketing director. "Scientology is a completely separate thing from Singer Consultants. Someone's decision to take a course from the Church of Scientology is their own affair, and our role is simply to allow the Scientology organizations to come to the seminars." Chiropractors make ideal subjects for Scientology because "they're in a line of work that is not well accepted, ...

Scientology loses bid to halt book — St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
Type: Press
Source: St. Petersburg Times (Florida)
The Church of Scientology lost a bid Thursday in a British court to ban a biography of its founder, the late science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard. The secretive religious movement, which has a headquarters in Clearwater, had asked the Court of Appeal for an injunction against publication of Bare Faced Messiah by London journalist Russell Miller. Such a ruling would have reversed a High Court decision dismissing their application as "mischievous and misconceived."

Over time, Catherine's daughter Susan noticed that her usually healthy mother was losing weight and was tired and withdrawn. After nine months, Catherine abruptly decided to move to the group's headquarters in a neighboring state. She liquidated all her assets, removed her daughter's name from their joint bank account and withdrew thousands of dollars of her life ...

CLEARWATER — Filling rows of a hearing room as if they were waiting for the service to begin, some 25 Pentecostal ministers from as far as Jacksonville came on Thursday to watch their brethren do battle with the property appraiser. To Pinellas Property Appraiser Ron Schultz, it is the proof that they still deserve the exemption. Rev. W.S. Craig, pastor of the Apostolic United Pentecostal Church in St. Petersburg, said he went for 31 years without having to justify to the ...

Another caller wanted to talk about our Sunday story regarding merchants in downtown Clearwater and how they appreciate the business of their Scientology customers. How many local residents, the caller wondered, stay away from the downtown area only because they don't want to be seen with Scientologists and be considered one of them, or at least because they would feel uncomfortable with the many Scientologists scurrying back and forth on downtown sidewalks? The caller believes there are many such people, and ...

Secretive as ever, the National Security Council (NSC) will not reveal precisely what kind of shredder Lt. Col. Oliver L. It was a Datatech product, an NSC spokeswoman said. It also said Intimus on it, she added, unhelpfully, since all Datatech shredders say Intimus on them. Once again, and perhaps as never ...

Is the Internal Revenue Service out of order in trying to revoke the tax-exempt status of Jim Bakker's PTL ministries for three years? Is this IRS effort part of a campaign that picks on religious operations? Or is it a federal government agency doing its job, objectively challenging the outrageous spending practices of an organization set up for religious and charitable purposes? Anytime the IRS moves, the danger of abuse exists. Short of death or some uncertain judgment day, the IRS ...
