Scientology’s hardcore critics say getting the church investigated is an uphill battle—and wonder if the religion has friends in high places The rush of cars zooming down Gilman Springs Road reminds Francois Choquette to watch his step on the dirt shoulder of the busy, two-lane highway to his right. A tuft of his brown hair flaps in the wind as he looks back to check traffic. He’s dressed modestly today, no costumes, no masks. Instead, he wears dress pants and a ...

BBC denies 'death threat' in Scientology row — The Telegraph (UK)
Type: Press
Author(s): Stephen Adams
Source: The Telegraph (UK)
The BBC has hit back at accusations that it orchestrated a demonstration against Scientologists during which a "terrorist death threat" was allegedly made. It comes as a bitter row develops between the Corporation and Scientologists over a highly critical Panorama documentary about the religion, in which a veteran reporter lost his temper and screamed for 30 seconds at a Church member. The BBC has seriously reprimanded John Sweeney for the outburst, which the journalist has admitted was "wrong and stupid". The ...

The faded little downtown area of Clearwater, Florida, has a beauty salon, a pizza parlor and one or two run-down bars, as well as a bunch of withered bungalows and some old storefronts that look as if they haven't seen customers in years. There are few cars and almost no pedestrians. There are, however, buses — a fleet of gleaming white and blue ones that slowly crawl through town, stopping at regular intervals to discharge a small army of tightly organized, ...

"Corrupt, sinister and dangerous" were the words used to describe the Church of Scientology in a judgment given by Mr Justice Latey this summer. He also referred to it as "immoral and socially obnoxious". But who controls the Church now? A major Sunday Times Magazine investigation into the activities of the cult in America and Britain has uncovered a disturbing and extraordinary story — the takeover of the organisation by a small band of youthful fanatics following the disappearance of the ...

Sect row over policy / Members Quit in 'Disconnection' Protest — East Grinstead Courier (UK)
Type: Press
Source: East Grinstead Courier (UK)
AT LEAST 10 leading local members of the East Grinstead-based Church of Scientology have resigned from the sect over policy differences, it was disclosed this week. It is understood that the resignations follow disquiet over the reintroduction of "disconnection" practices whereby church members are advised to completely sever relations with fellow members. These policies were abandoned for a time in 1968. It is alleged that these disconnection policies are now beck in force since a new policy dated September 10, 1983. ...
