All of them, those in power, and those who want the power, would pamper us, if we agreed to overlook their crookedness by wilfully restricting our activities.

One day, months ago, I was sifting through my mountain of Scientology-related stuff, to find one particular fact out of the multitude available to me. I have Scientology leaflets, publications (Way to Happiness, Scientology Handbook, WIS, 2 separate editions of Dianetics, and more), miscellaneous abusive email and snail mail to Toronto critics, a small mountain of Scientology-related newspaper clippings, and so forth. Naturally, I couldn't find the reference to that one fact. I've even forgotten what it was. The salient point here is: I am in possession of a mass of Scientology-related information, but I have no catalogue, no filing system, no indexes. I know where all the documents are, but I don't know which fact is referenced by which document.
Around the same time, I had a conversation with Arnie Lerma on irc.scientologylies.com #scientologylies, in which we discussed the abundance of information, but the relative lack of synthesis in the entheta world. Basically, there's a lot of dots out there, but not as many connections as there could be.
For example, when was Scientologist X in newspaper article Y? Is it relevant that this Scientologist is still a Scientologist today? Does that Scientologist appear in other articles? Is it relevant that a Scientologist charged in the Canadian GO caper has the same first name as a GO member sending success stories to the US? And how could I easily access the information to draw conclusions to these questions?
Then, a few days later on, I was updating xenu.ca, and was reminded of the existence of the excellent "Scientology History in Toronto" located here. [fixed non-working link — R. Hill]
So, I thought, that's what I can do. I can make my own timeline, to expand on the previous item, which unfortunately stopped at 1995. And maybe add some items to Kristi Wachter's cool "This Day in Scientology History".
However, making my own timeline didn't work out. I felt even more snowed under by the mountains of theta and entheta around me. My work on my own timeline petered out. Every date required amazing amounts of running around. Sometimes information concerning each year/month/day was in the unlikeliest of places.
A number of weeks later, I was in the shower thinking about this problem (Archimedes had his displacement idea in a bath, so get off my case). It struck me that what I really needed to synthesize this was a database, which I could mine for information as the database grew more complex.
Coincidentally, when I nipped into #scientologylies to check the most recent topic, I ended up discussing databases with another denizen of that channel. After leaving the channel, I started designing the schema for my spdb. I designed it so that the existence of any one thing is separate from that thing's relationships to other things in the database, and so far the whole project is going quite well. (I'm using PostgreSQL on a Debian machine, so the database should be quite portable to other systems. Note that I don't have any formal sql/db training, so suggestions are of course welcome.)
Now, my work has started to bear fruit. Below is a list of all the Scientologists and former Scientologists who appeared in about 215 media articles (ie my Canadian clippings collection) between 1966 and 2001. Some of the names should be familiar to everyone, some only Canadians will get. I've provided two copies of the list: One sorted by family name then personal name, one sorted by personal name then family name. There are already some fascinating correlations popping up (see if you can spot them). If anybody has any questions I'll be glad to answer them.
Credit here is due to Arnie Lerma, the (Slatkinfraud and IRC) Research Elves, efish, Kristi Wachter, and the multitudinous denizens of irc.scientologylies.com #scientologylies for various amounts of inspiration, encouragement and criticism.
